300 Sketches

The Beginning *Pencil Sketches with tone and shading*
 (initial ideas)
At the beginning of this assignment I did not know what to draw. I did some sketches during the workshop session but I did not want to use it because the quality of the drawings were not up to my standards, instead I started sketching whatever comes up in my head. I spent a long time drawing but later realised I need to be doing quick and simple sketches with less detail and tonal shading.

Bedroom Observation *Pencil Sketches with tone and shading*
I started scouting around my bedroom, looking for objects to draw from. Next to my sketch book I saw my rubber which caught my eye for a warm up sketch. I saw my Rubik cube and plastic water bottle and had the thought of sketching it. Starting from here, an idea popped up in my mind, to draw cosmetic objects lying around in my room ,such as perfumes and lipsticks.

Here I have learnt my lesson from the previous sketching exercise, to apply less shading and detail so I can produce multiple drawings in a short period of time.
After sketching some cosmetic things I explored the different types of makeup brushes. Through this exploration I noticed their were similar looking brushes and different sizes but each had its own use. I had also notice the smaller the brush tips, the smaller the brush stem gets. The stem gradually gets smaller from the brush tip.
Therefore I have developed drawings indicating types of makeup brushes.
Living room Observation  *Pencil Sketches with tone and shading*
My dad caught my eye when he was drinking wine which inspired me to sketch wine glasses and wine bottles. I saw different types of wine glasses and thought it would be a good idea to sketch and explore the shape.

Looking around the living room I did a quick sketch of a door in 2D. I then sketched a half opened door to show its function and components that constructs a door. Instead of drawing two different views to show the functions of a window, I combined it into one showing a closed window and a half opened widow.

In every house there are curtains however there are also multiple different types of curtains. On this page I explored 18 types of curtains, showing what and how they look like from detailed sketches through the use of lines creating creases.
Finding objects  *Pencil Sketches with tone and shading*
(ideas)
After drawing a while, I began struggling finding things to draw from. I walked around my bedroom and living room looking for something to sketch. I came across a jar and lemon which I thought it would be interesting to show the details of them, such as transparent jar with with food in it  and showing features of a cut open lemon.

The jewellery box had a design which I found appealing to me. The lines on top of the box surrounding the swan and the side as an outline has a unique shape to it.

I then sketched things in my life that are important to me or I use during regular basis. The structure of the usb album was very unique which caught my eye of exploring the details of it. It was difficult to sketch out most of the details that were on the cosmetic bottles, sunscreen and facial cleansing product. I explored the structure of these two product of their labelling and the shape of it.

Exploration of display stands, containers and boxes
*Pencil Sketches with tone and shading*

Here I have explored different types and shapes of packagings such as envelopes, square packagings, and hair tie packagings. I discovered two different types of hair tie packagings, one was transparent plastic box and the other was  a piece of card with hair ties around it.

Next I looked at packagings for various of objects such as pens, accessories and jewellery boxes. It was interesting how packaging for pens can be made in the same way as jewellery boxes. The only difference would be the use of materials, shape and net for the box.

I also explored two different types of envelops, showing how it can be made in many different ways.

On the table I saw organiser containers which inspired me to explore different types of containers. It included types of jewellery boxes and organiser box for multipurpose usage.
This page shows a range of display stands. This includes different materials and layouts such as multi layered sections and similar shapes for different usages.
I then looked at food packagings which has a plastic window allowing consumers to see the inside. I was astonished how some of the packagings were assembled as I did not know how irregular shape packagings were made.
Feedback  *Pencil Sketches with tone and shading*
I received feedback from my tutors. One of my tutors suggested me to shade in one direction, avoiding messy lines. My lines were flying in different directions when I applied shading which made it look extremely messy. This does not make my sketches look pretty, nor looks refreshing.

She also suggested me to play around with colour, not just focusing on pencils sketches.
Exploration of foods  *Pencil Sketches with tone and shading*
At first I started drawing different types of fruits and thought it would be interesting to explore the inside of a cut fruit.
Next I looked into types of breads to show the difference in appearance and texture through the use of tone and shading.
I looked at two different shapes of chocolates. One of them were chocolate bar and the other was a block of chocolate.
Things needed for study  *Pencil Sketches with tone and shading*
First I sketched out two different types of note books. Both were assembled using different methods. When I was sketching I also noticed how one of the notebooks had a sticker on it whereas the other did not. They had one similarity where they both are A4 size with lined paper inside. I also looked at the structure of a opened sketch book, showing another way how books can be made by using staples.

When I study, I need coffee next to me to help motivate me so I looked into coffee cups. I explored the materials that was used for it and how it works. I also looked into the components of each cup.

Shapes and shading  *Pencil Sketches with tone and shading*
In the first five sketches I explored through different shapes and used line shading whereas with the other five shapes, I used the cross-hatching method for shading despite keeping the same shapes. I wanted to show how the same shapes can be sketched to have different texture through the use of another techique.
Exploration and Observation of clothing and hairstyles
*Pencil Sketches with tone and shading*

On this page I explored different types of hairstyles and clothings. I went into detail showing  types of socks providing the name and how it looks on a foot.
Here I explored different types of skirts and their names. Throughout the process of sketching, I learnt the structure of how each skirt was made through drawing details of creases and layers of fabric. I was astonished how each skirt had its own unique name. I also looked into the length of these types of skirts, giving an idea of how it would look when it is being worn.
I went through the same process from the previous sketches of skirts to explore types of dresses.

Something I did different here was how I looked at traditional Chinese clothing called, Qipao. This is a traditional Chinese dress which was being worn during the 20th century. I have shown the same designs of a Qipao dress suggesting itncan look very unique by the change of length and slits of an opening.
I have repeated the same process looking into types of woman pants, including shorts. I always saw people wearing different styles of pants and wondered what they were called. Through sketching I understood the different structures of pants and shorts but also their names.
Digital work *Digital sketches with added colour*
On the top half of this page, I used digital sketching imitating ink pens and pencil drawings. I explored new ideas of cartoon characters and pop up cards.

On the bottom half I chose some of the previous sketches to add colours to it, giving a more cartoon look or a realistic effect. This is where I developed some previous sketches by adding colour and even more details to show its characteristics.
Evaluation
Overall I found 300 sketches very challenging, especially I am not used to spending a lot of time continuously producing sketches in a short amount of time.  I usually spend a significant amount of time adding details and getting everything looking perfect, so during the start I was scared to speed up and do quick sketches with less details. I was afraid that it would look nothing like the object that I am trying to communicate with the audience, but as time runs by I concurred my fear and started to sketch faster. In short words I learnt to record ideas in a short period of time.

In my 300 sketches I explored a range of objects in the living room and bedroom such as, cosmetics, food, bottles, cups, packagings, and clothings. I also worked with different medias such as pencil sketching and digital art work.
